Meet Anke – Ireland’s Top Sommelier
Originally from Dresden, Germany, Anke began her career as a chef in a Michelin-starred restaurant before transitioning to wine in 2002 while working in the UK. She trained under legendary sommeliers, including the late Gérard Basset (Best Sommelier in the World 2010), and competed internationally to refine her knowledge across wine, spirits, beer, sake, and cocktails.
Anke moved to Ireland to become Head Sommelier at the Cliff House Hotel, helping it become a top destination for food and wine lovers. After 13 years abroad, she returned to Germany and led a Michelin-starred restaurant to its second star in just one year, while exploring the country’s wine regions.
She holds both the WSET Diploma and the Certified Sommelier title, and has been teaching WSET Levels 1–3 since 2016. Her passion for education has taken her from Dublin to Mallorca, leading private and public wine masterclasses.
In 2022, she was named Best Sommelier of Ireland and represented the country at the World’s Best Sommelier Competition in Paris in 2023. She now sets her sights on earning the Master Sommelier Diploma, one of the toughest wine qualifications in the world, held by only 271 people globally.
